Strategy and advisory support

Resolving conflicts in conservation can  perplexing and daunting, and can benefit greatly from an impartial specialist perspective and support. This may involve specialist help in analysing a situation, such as mapping out the positions, interests, relationships and power dynamics of the parties involved, and identifying underlying histories, identities and issues that are blocking mutually agreeable solutions.

Such advisory support typically involves helping parties develop strategies for engaging constructively and strategically with conflict. This includes determining whether third party mediation is needed, mapping out a way forward that is appropriate for the given intensity of conflict. Prior or integrated trainings such as tailored versions of our courses may also be helpful.

Common areas of support include:

  • Conflict analysis: workshops to analyse and map key issues

  • Tailored training: in-organisation training adapted to specific contexts

  • Process strategy: design of stakeholder dialogue process, how to move forward, stages, steps to be taken

  • Mediation: preparation, shuttling, facilitating and other third-party neutral support

  • Monitoring: review processes, monitor for red flags, support with continuation plans or exit strategies

  • Research: specific preparatory data collection and analyses needed for specific cases
